The modern haiku poets don't always write haiku using 5-7-5 syllables. Moreover, they are not restricted to use 'kigo' (seasonal reference) in their haiku. This is quite evident, if we peruse the haiku included in this anthology. The haiku poems in English show an increasing popularity all over the world. This is quite apparent by the fact that haiku influenced the great Imagist poet Ezra Pound's "In a Station of the Metro" (1913). The famous Nobel laureate Czeslaw Milosz published the volume Haiku (1992) in which "he translated from English to Polish haiku of Japanese masters and American and Canadian contemporary haiku authors". This latest Haiku Anthology comprises some of the best haiku in English. The poets selected for this book probe the mysteries of life and the depths of the human soul. The most important characteristic of these haiku poets is genuine emotion. Longinus aptly comments about the value of true emotion: "I would confidently affirm that nothing makes so much for grandeur as true emotion in the right place, for it inspires the words, as it were, with a wild gust of mad enthusiasm and fills them with divine frenzy."
