Sonnet Mondal

Born and brought up at the industrial city of Asansol of West Bengal in India Sonnet’s childhood was marked by visiting several places with his parents. His father Mr. Kajal Mondal is a banker and mother Mrs. Sima Mondal is a housewife. His schooling was carried out at the St. Michael’s school, Durgapur till class ten and he completed class eleven and twelve from the Hemsheela Model school of Durgapur in India. However he used to pass his holidays in his maternal house in a village named Jahidpur. Jahidpur is a village surrounded by dense ‘Sal’ forests on all sides segregating it from the busy city life and pollution. The green flora and fauna, the dense forests and wide spreading fields of paddy and rice in Jahidpur were surely some inspirations that later got reflected in his poems. He also passed much of his initial days of childhood in the coal belt area of Sripur and destiny later turned him towards Mining engineering. He was never too fascinated by his poetic name and took least interest in the genre of poetry. Though Sonnet was very shy and introvert he frequently used to take part in drama performances in school and outside. The only complaint of his class teachers was that he was too shy to ask questions or communicate. His poem "I am Still Shy" vividly portrays his feelings about this. The year 2005 was a major turnover of his life when he penned a fourteen lines poem named "My Western Friend" while writing an essay as homework from his English teacher. This poem itself was the inspiration for his further poetry writing many of which are in this collection. While appearing in interviews he often tells that "I was never inspired by poetry but poetry pulled me into itself." This was also the year from when he started learning Tabla under the guidance of Sri Sishir Banerjee one of the disciples of Pt. Ramji Mishra of Benaras Gharana. Within just one year of learning he appeared in many stage shows but the heaping recognition and honours for his verses & books made him take this subject less seriously but he still continues to perform though in a much less regular basis.

From the year 2005 to 2007 he used to scribble poems in his travel diary penning whatever came to his young mind until his works came into the sight of an Indian scholar and author named Prof. Dr. Ramesh Chandra Mukhopadhyaya who guided him and helped him to get involved in the avant-garde Underground Literature movement let alone helping him to get his first book out under the title "A Poetic Peep Into The Post Modern World" in 2007. After this he has written more books and has won several honours and accolades for his works.

Though a lover of English Literature and arts, Sonnet never took the subject in his main study course. He has been a student of science all throughout. While replying to an interview conducted by The India Today magazine he told that, "Writing is my passion and engineering is my profession". Sonnet is currently a BTech. student of Mining Engineering at the second oldest engineering college of India, the Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur.

Sonnet writes poetry mostly at night. No, he doesn’t find the sunlight unsuitable for writing poetry but he prefers to light a torch in the darkness through his verses. The present book presents 75 such verses penned by him mostly at night.
