Description:
Moon Gazing or 'Tsukimi,'
was introduced from
China
and spread through
Japan
in the Heian period (794-1192) as the custom to
appreciate the full moon in mid-September, according
to the lunar calendar.
Writing haibun is a
descriptive
combination of prose and haiku poetry. A mirror image
of 'our' regular world. The haibun focus is on
everyday experiences, reflecting fragmented thoughts.
Sometimes short-sighted, shallow and corny but just
as much with clever phrases and lucid quotes. Most
often [but not necessarily] it is written in the
present tense with a
multiplicity of ideas: from snake pit and hot birds
to fairground attractions, tattoos and young bamboo
shoots.

Description:
Among
the various formulations of realization
of oneness in Zen, none is more widely known
than the Oxherding Pictures, a sequence of ten
illustrations annotated with comments in prose and
verse. The original drawings and the commentary that
accompanies them are so ancient that no one knows
their origin. But the twelfth-century Chinese Zen master, Kakuan, re-wrote the Taoist parable of 'the
Ten Oxherding Songs', to guide students in
their spiritual journeys. Regardless of what
specific path we follow, the old Zen Buddhist Allegory is a most
beautiful representation of the entire journey to
the rediscovery of the True Self. The Ox represents
the Self being sought, and the person is the Seeker.
The old story was an invitation for my own modest,
playful and highly personal interpretation. Feel
free! Be your own prophet. Following
this story, this book at hand is a modest and playful
contribution to a spiritual quest.

Description:
'Brother
Buddha' - what an apt title for this book
by Geert - impish, playful. Geert; a
brother not only to the Buddha, but to
haijin the world over. The output of material from
this man simply takes my breath away -
haiku books rolled off in days; many of them in
conjunction with his beloved Jenny, whose photographs
have their own startling brilliance. Geert's haiku
have always appealed to me, from a first reading
through the many books to this latest. His capability
to express profound, intellectual, simple and sad
themes with a conversational naturalness. I would not
do these haiku a disservice by dissecting them (I
leave that to the lab-coated technicians, to fret
over a misplaced cesura, or a word too many) I would
simply suggest to the reader, open any of Geert's
books, and sitting comfortably, let him converse with
you - like some well-travelled cuddly
uncle, eager to share his discoveries with his family.

Description: The dementia
of my brother-in-law (Hans Vanpoucke 1940-1996),
came on very fast. On the road to death he
invented new names for the stars. His and my sister
Dora's story was the first step in writing of my
observations about a disease that is legendary for
creating fear, confusion, and imposed loneliness. An

My thoughts wander off
to Paris, I am madly in love with this town as an
inspiring life parade, where I wrote the first
haibun for this book. The 'Seine' has fine
esplanades within the shadow of the Eiffel Tower
and 'la Maison de la Culture du Japon'. I met
there the president of the French Haiku
Association. 'Bonjour Dominique Chipot!'
Paris, the perfect source for the kuyu (haiku
lovers) and the haibun readers. I am the archivist
of my own emotions, written with a clarity that
you hopefully will appreciate. Just remember the
words of the peculiar jazz pianist Martial Solal:
'People say that I am an autodidact. That's not
right, I've got a very good professor:
myself.'

Description: Any paranormal power regarding the cards aside, I am intrigued by their use to provide new perspectives to events in our lives. Geert's loving fascination with playing cards comes out with his vibrant descriptions and accounts which made me appreciate the art and symbolism in their printings that before I had taken for granted. His inclusion here of their history and cultural influences is enlightening. Geert's haiku poetry is powerful and his prose flows like poetic free verse peppered with images from a world traveler, his wonderful humor and personal insights. WARNING:
this book dares to tell the truth.

JOKERMAN:
First
thing first: this haibun-book is not a fortune-telling
book, and certainly not the prayer book of the devil!
No, this book is only written to have a good time. The
haiku is a Japanese verse form that relies on brevity
and simplicity to convey its poetical message. It
developed from tanka and was mainly influenced by Matsuo
Bashō (1644-1694) who is known as the first great
haiku poet. Indeed. a 'modern' haiku can be any length
from a few to 17 syllables in 3 lines. The theme of a
haiku refers to nature although 'nature' can be
interpreted in a global sense. A seasonal word (kigo) is
no longer a necessity.

Haibun
is a combination of prose and a few haiku poems. Its
focus is often on everyday experiences. The haibun draws
inspiration from the haiku. A well balanced haiku pays
attention to daily events connected with the author, his
environment and his acquaintances. The haibun asks
austerity and a light-footed approach. The haiku,
written with a beginner's mind in or after the haibun is
a supplement to the text, not a repetition. The
relationship between the prose and the haiku is often
subtle. Free associations and a mild touch of irony are
always present. The haibun can be written as a playful
column, not necessarily following any tradition. A few
authors are writing rather provocative, the haibun as a
satirical blow-up.

You
will find haibun in a bantering tone. Do you care for
meditative and contemplative points of view in which
humour is not overlooked? You will find your little
piece of candy! The reflections are talking with a
humble opinion, loving our wonderful world. All kinds of
characteristics, information and playful observations
are reviewed to please you, and even to badger you for a
sound mind in a sound body. You're welcome.
This
modest book holds up a mirror in which you and I can
read a vague description of our life(s) and vitality,
dignity and wisdom, love and affections, intelligence
and inspiration. The
most reliable results are said to be obtained by a
light-hearted approach. Haibun as a literary form is in
transition, developing between spiritual meditation and
playful poetry. The variety and pliability of this form
makes it one of the most exciting in the haiku
repertoire.
Keep
away from some fortune-tellers for manipulation, cheap
swindle and exorbitant prices!

The
research for profound information, meanings and
associations learned that contumacy is a household word
for telling fortunes with ordinary playing-cards. It is
a well-known and famous form of divination that has been
around for almost as long as the cards themselves.
Playing-cards are in existence since thousands of
years... they are a beautiful part of our entail. Their
meaning, sense and symbolism has an archetypical form
and content which is extraordinary, fascinating and
attractive. It can't be denied that the value for
relaxation and recreation of the cards is great, they
are an unrivalled remedy as means of passing the time.
Not only in a countless club of card players, but also
in canteens and for an enjoyable
time at home.
